Traditionally, especially when you are starting out with a project or you are working at smaller companies, there is a GitHub repo, a test environment on which the new features are checked using various test methodologies and then it’s off to production. If something goes wrong here — oops sorry! Rollback. Not a nice feeling. Especially when your company, the application and the user base grows bigger you have to come up with some more robust and sophisticated strategies to publish new updates to your live product.

1. Staging Environment Strategy

A simple, inexpensive remedy can be a staging environment. The staging environment is a pre-production environment that mirrors the production environment as closely as possible. It is used to deploy and test new features, updates, and configurations before they are released to production. How to prepare yourself to a possible incident or failure during or after the deployment?

  1. Backups: Always have at least one Backup of your systems of the previous version ready
  2. Release Notes: Keep track of the changes in the new version. This might help you to identify the critical areas where the error might have occured quicker and allows you to communicate changes to the clients in a more definitive way.
  3. Have a rollback plan: Have a clear and tested rollback plan in case the update fails, that also includes all the dependencies.
  4. Notify all stakeholders: Inform all relevant stakeholders about the update schedule, potential downtime, and impact. If there is a support team at your organization, make sure they are also up to date and ready to help.
  5. Monitor Systems: Use monitoring tools to track system health before, during and after the update
  6. Document the Process: Document the entire update process, any issues encountered, and how they were resolved
